Call LACERA at 800-786-6464 as soon as possible to report a member’s death. The sooner LACERA is notified, the sooner a benefit account in the survivor’s name can be established.

As the survivor or beneficiary of a LACERA member, you are part of the LACERA family. This section was created to help you understand the benefits you may be entitled to and includes information about the benefits process, eligible beneficiaries, survivor benefits, survivor healthcare, and taxability of benefits.

If you are the survivor of a LACERA member who has recently passed away, call us at 800-786-6464 as soon as possible. The sooner LACERA is notified, the sooner we can establish a benefit account. We understand that a time of loss is a difficult and emotional period and are here to help you with any LACERA-related matters and to expedite the benefits process. Other important phone numbers are provided below.

If your member spouse/partner is retired or has enough service credit to retire but is still working, you should discuss filing a LACERA Special Durable Power of Attorney with us. The LACERA Special Durable Power of Attorney designates an individual to conduct important LACERA business on the member’s behalf in the event they become ill, incapacitated, or unable to handle their own affairs.
