Social Security Scams to be Aware of
Be warned that scammers are now using fake Amazon or PayPal tech support emails and text messages to trick the public into connecting with an imposter Social Security Administration (SSA) employee under the guise that their Social Security Number (SSN) or record has been compromised.
These fabricated email or text messages claim that something is wrong with the viewer’s Amazon or PayPal account, and while trying to fix the issue, the scammer states that while searching the computer they’ve found other problems, relevant to the SSN. They then offer “assistance” by pretending to represent the SSA.
This type of scam is also known as ‘pig butchering,’ explains Special Agent in Charge, Anthony Monaco of the SSA. It is a drawn-out scam that unfortunately drains unsuspecting victims of most or all resources.
