If you are an eligible survivor of an active member who dies while in County service, you may be eligible for death benefits in the form of a lump sum or continuing monthly allowance depending on the member’s length of service and whether the death was service-connected or nonservice-connected.
Death benefits are payable only to the survivors of contributory members of Plan A, B, C, D, or G. LACERA does not provide death benefits for active members in Plan E. If you are the survivor of a Plan E member, contact the County’s Department of Human Resources at 213-388-9982 to see if you are eligible for County-sponsored benefits. LACERA does not administer these plans.
A person other than an eligible survivor can receive a lump-sum death benefit subsequent to the death of an active member if they are a named beneficiary.
