Mr. Ryu is the first Asian Pacific Islander American (APIA) to be appointed to the Board of Investments. He is an ethics reformer, community mental healthcare advocate, and former Los Angeles City Councilmember. Elected in 2015, he was the second APIA to serve on the Los Angeles City Council and the first to serve as Assistant Pro Tempore in Council leadership. He currently serves as President and Executive Director of the Asian Pacific American Leadership Foundation and is the Chief Strategy and Advancement Officer at Kedren Community Health.
His notable accomplishments include:
- Secured $90+ million for mental health in South L.A. and $50 million for citywide after-school programs
- Passed landmark campaign finance reform in 2019 that barred campaign donations from real estate developers with business before the city
- Created legislation to expand oversight in City Hall and create stronger checks on pay-to-play corruption
- Launched Opportunity LA, the nation’s largest children’s savings account program in L.A. city and county
- Advocated for and secured COVID-19 testing early in the pandemic
- Championed grave disability reform, paid parental leave, and autonomous vehicles
- Created hillside construction regulation zones, concrete streets program, utility box art program, and COVID-related arts relief fund
- Passed into law exotic animals ban, house party ordinance and tour bus ordinance
- Founded Pacific Bridge Arts Foundation to support and celebrate APIAs in arts and culture
- Studied Economics at UCLA and Public Policy and Administration at Rutgers; NetKAL Fellow, USC School of Social Work
