Social Security and Medicare
The County of Los Angeles withdrew its employees from the Social Security system on January 1, 1983. Plan G members do not pay into Social Security, but they do contribute toward and are eligible for Medicare.
Social Security Eligibility
You may be eligible for Social Security if you:
- Earned enough credit through Social Security-covered outside employment
- Are eligible through your spouse/ex-spouse
Medicare Eligibility
Employees in Plan G contribute toward Medicare benefits through a deduction known as the federal Health Insurance Tax (H.I.T).
As part of their Tier 2 Retiree Healthcare benefits, Plan G members are required to sign up for Medicare when they turn 65.
