Contribution Rates
LACERA's retirement fund relies on three sources of funding: investment earnings, employer contributions, and employee (member) contributions. Your contribution rate for General Plan D (a legacy plan) is a percentage of your compensation earnable, based on your entry age into LACERA.
As a legacy plan, General Plan D member contribution rates are generally updated when certain actuarial assumptions change, as determined in a study called an investigation of experience, conducted every three years.
Adjustments are based on changes to actuarial assumptions, and rates are calculated by LACERA’s actuary based on retirement law. The law requires the member to pay a portion of the cost of their retirement benefits and also requires that the cost-of-living benefit amount be shared equally between the member and the employer. (Employer rates are updated annually based on fund evaluations.) Read more about how contributions rates are set.

How Entry Age is Determined
Your entry age is your nearest age at the time you become a LACERA member.
- If you were within six months of your next birthday when you joined LACERA, your entry age is based on the age you will become on that birthday.
- If you were more than six months from your next birthday when you joined LACERA, your entry age is based on the age you were on the first day of your membership.
Regardless of how many years you work, your contributions are calculated based on your entry age. Under some conditions, entry age for returning employees may be based on their age at the time they rejoined LACERA. For more information, contact us.
